A general laboratory report does not automatically include every value frequently discussed in health media. This selection therefore follows the Austrian preventive-care laboratory panel. It includes fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and GGT; depending on the applicable panel, the red blood cell profile is also included.

Fasting blood glucose: a snapshot
Fasting blood glucose shows the amount of glucose in the blood after at least eight hours without caloric intake. The ADA classifies 100–125 mg/dL as impaired fasting glucose and 126 mg/dL or higher as a diagnostic threshold for diabetes. Without unequivocal hyperglycaemia, an abnormal result usually needs to be confirmed. The value is a snapshot and can be affected by acute illness, medication or incomplete fasting.
Total cholesterol: an initial overview
Total cholesterol combines several cholesterol fractions. It provides an initial overview but is not sufficient on its own to determine cardiovascular risk. The complete lipid profile—particularly LDL and HDL—and additional risk factors are also considered.
HDL cholesterol: important, but not a shield
HDL contributes to cardiovascular risk assessment. A low HDL value can be associated with higher risk. A high value does not automatically offset other risks such as elevated LDL, smoking, high blood pressure or diabetes.
Triglycerides: influenced by metabolism and fasting status
Triglycerides are storage fats circulating in the blood. They can be influenced by meals, alcohol intake, metabolism and body weight. When fasting, a value below 150 mg/dL is below the commonly used threshold; 150 mg/dL or above is elevated. Very high results should be assessed promptly because of the potential risk of pancreatitis.
GGT: a sensitive but non-specific liver marker
GGT can rise in connection with the liver or bile ducts, alcohol use and certain medicines. It is sensitive but not specific: an elevation does not identify the cause, and a normal result does not reliably exclude disease. The laboratory reference range, other liver tests and changes over time are important.
Red blood cell profile and haemoglobin
The red blood cell profile includes erythrocytes, haemoglobin and haematocrit. Haemoglobin carries oxygen. Low results can indicate anaemia but do not identify its cause. Sex, pregnancy, age and altitude influence interpretation; the laboratory reference range and medical context also matter.
The overall picture still matters
Even commonly measured basic values only become meaningful when considered with symptoms, existing conditions, medication, fasting status and changes over time. A reference range is a guide, and a single result is not a diagnosis.
